Area Schools Offer a Variety of Public & Private Learning!
Primary & Secondary Schools
|
Vigo County School Corporation and Clay Community Schools as well as other surrounding school districts offer quality public, elementary and secondary educations to residents of Vigo, Clay, Parke, Sullivan and Vermillion counties in Indiana, and Marshall Community Schools in Illinois.
Terre Haute’s own Rio Grande Elementary school on Terre Haute’s northside has placed in the top 10 percent in the state for ISTEP testing. It’s academic success has earned it national recognition when it was named a “No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School for 2004-05” by the U.S. Department of Education.
Further, Honey Creek Middle School, on Terre Haute’s southside was recognized with a Four Star School Award from the Indiana Incentive Awards Program. Honey Creek’s students consistently place high in academic competitions such as the Academic Super Bowl, Spell Bowl, Math Counts, Geography Bowl, Science Fair, and History Day.
In addition to public education resources, the area also offers a couple of private education alternatives for elementary, middle, and secondary schools through Sacred Heart and St. Patricks schools.
Additional training outlets are also available for youth through Sylvan Learning Center, Head Start programs, and Learning Tree/Montessori schools.

| Few cities can claim the wealth and diversity of educational institutions, which Terre Haute boasts. There are three major educational institutions with roots deeply embedded in local history. In 1874, a local philanthropist, Chauncey Rose, founded the Terre Haute School of Industrial Science. This engineering college was later changed to Rose Polytechnic Institute, and is now Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Ranked Number One for several years, Rose-Hulman is the best undergraduate engineering and science college in the United States.
Indiana State University began as Indiana State Normal College in 1870, and offers students the opportunity to study in any of 175 different programs on its 90-acre campus located in the heart of downtown. Personal attention makes attending ISU different from just about any other university. A mid sized campus with about 12,000 students, classes rarely exceed 35 students and many will have no more than 20 to 25 students.
Saint Mary of the Woods College, a women's liberal arts college, is located just west of the city. Founded in 1870 by Mother Theodore Guerin and a group of French nuns, Saint Mary of-the-Woods College is the oldest private Catholic college for women in the United States. Situated on a 67 acre wooded campus, SMWC is peaceful and beautiful. Offering a first-rate liberal arts education, there are more than 25 majors from which to choose. In 2005, SMWC also has announced the enrollment of male students on campus for the first time! Training & Certifications Ivy Tech Community College is one of the fastest growing public institutions in the Wabash Valley. Now offering technical certifications and Associates Degrees, Ivy Tech provides quality training to benefit both area adult-learners and area industry. Also located in Terre Haute is Indiana Business College. Founded in 1902, the private career school has ten locations across the state, and offers both diploma and A.A.S. degree programs. Everyone offers free school reports. But, having lived most of her life in the Terre Haute area, Patty knows the community schools. She can tell you things about the schools that no report generated by a computer will ever know. Remember, Patty consults with people moving to the area on a daily basis. Contact Patty for a first-hand experience of the local schools, or check out her free school reports. What ages are your children? Patty and her team can help you with what your choices are for schools in the area. It's our job to help! There's no obligation, and we promise to get back to you quickly...
Financing Your Home >Early Loan Approval
Many lenders help prospective buyers get pre-approved for a mortgage loan before the buyers begin a serious house-hunting effort. If you are in this position, give the loan officer all of the information about your assets, income, and debts so they can tell you how much you will be able to borrow under the available loan options. The loan officer will do a credit check and work with the lender to straighten out any problems with your credit rating.
Pre-approval from a lender can make you more attractive to the seller when you find the home you want. Multiple offers sometimes come in on a house, and you may find yourself competing with other buyers. In that case, it is helpful if you have included a letter from the lender with your offer stating that you have an approved loan and are, indeed, qualified to buy. This will also save you time by eliminating from consideration any homes that you would not be able to afford.
